How to Shape an Affirmation your Mind Will Accept

Part 3 of 3: Manifestation, Frequency and the Art of the Affirmation

In Part 1, we saw why affirmations meet resistance. In Part 2, we saw how energy flows through us, and how frequency sets the scene. Now it is time to place the order: to shape an affirmation that the mind and body will accept, rather than reject.

Shaping Affirmations: Linking This to EFT

Coming across blockages in EFT is typical at some point, and requires some fancy footwork to negotiate. EFT works with the energy meridians and points on the physical body, and is understood to help calm the amygdala, where our unconscious reactions to life originate. So when we hit blockages in this modality, it tells us we need to work with the physical body and its unconscious drives.

There is no right or wrong about these responses to the environment. The human organism simply seeks to survive, and it does so in the most efficient way it perceives at the time. However, this response does not always serve our higher desires or reasoning, being a primitive response to survival.

Knowing this, we can take heart and learn to redirect the flow of energy through us, using correctly positioned affirmations that gradually shape our ability to accept the ultimate affirmation of what we want. Each stepping-stone affirmation is accepted by the amygdala because it is seen as a safe alternative to the existing input. It sits at a slightly higher frequency than where we are now, and within reach, as opposed to the frequency of the ultimate manifestation, which the strong positive statement represents, and which may feel vastly out of reach.

In this way of shaping, we acknowledge our resistance, because it is real and it is based on our past experiences and emotions. All we need to do is start a small glimmer of hope within us that allows us to consider the possibility that life could be different from what it is now. That is all it takes to start on the path of a truly positive emotion.

The Question Trick

The trendy idea seems to be that affirmations don’t work, but asking yourself a question does, for example “Why am I a billionaire?” The reason this works is the new framing. The mind does not mind answering a question like this, because it sees it as non-threatening, unlike the “nonsense-speak” of a positive affirmation. It sees a question as something to work on, which suits the monkey style of the brain that constantly needs to be busy. So although the question is touted as the antidote to the affirmation that doesn’t work, it is in fact a neat trick that allows the brain to come up with its own positive affirmations, by answering the question in the positive, because that is how it is framed.

Shaping an Affirmation, Step by Step

Here is how to build your own ladder of affirmations, one rung at a time.

1.      Name where you are now. Be honest. This is your starting point, not a judgement.

2.     Name where you want to be. This is your ultimate affirmation, the one that may feel out of reach right now.

3.     Build the rungs in between. Each one sits just a little higher than the one before. Use gentle, open words such as “I am willing…”, “I am open to…”, “I am learning…” and “I choose…”.

4.     Feel each one. Say it out loud and notice your body. If it tightens, or a voice inside says “that’s not true”, step down a rung. If it feels neutral, or gives you a small lift, that is your rung.

5.     Stay, then step up. Repeat that affirmation until it feels natural and true, then move up to the next one.

Example 1: Healthy Eating

Where you are now: “I can’t stop snacking on rubbish.”

•        “I am willing to consider that the way I eat could change.”

•        “I am starting to notice what my body really asks for.”

•        “Today I choose one meal that truly nourishes me.”

•        “I am becoming someone who enjoys feeding my body well.”

Your ultimate affirmation: “I love nourishing my body with good food.”

Example 2: Financial Success

Where you are now: “There’s never enough money.”

•        “I am open to the possibility that money can come to me more easily.”

•        “I am learning to care for the money I have.”

•        “I notice and appreciate every bit of money that comes my way.”

•        “I am creating more financial ease, step by step.”

Your ultimate affirmation: “I am wealthy and abundant.”

Notice that this is the very affirmation we started with in Part 1, the one the mind rejected. Approached one rung at a time, it becomes something the mind and body can finally accept.

You can also combine this with the question trick, by turning any rung into a question: “Why is it getting easier for me to choose food that nourishes me?” or “Why is money coming to me more easily?”

Create Your Own Affirmations in the MyReset App

The MyReset app includes a feature that lets you create your own positive affirmations. Use it to build your personal ladder: start with the rung that feels true for you today, and step up as each one settles in.

Before you begin, play one of the Manifestation Frequencies soundscapes. As we saw in Part 2, frequency sets the scene, organising the energy within so the channel is clear. Then, with your body settled, place your order with an affirmation you can truly feel.

Don't Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater

Affirmations do indeed work, in the time-honoured way, but we certainly need to understand how to shape a positive affirmation as a step-by-step process that bypasses the resistance of the conscious or traumatised mind.

Remember that manifestation works equally in the positive and the negative, through the same process of energy flowing through us. The outcome is the symptom of the inner state. It is the thing we point at and say is failing us, instead of looking at our inner state and attending to what needs shifting or healing. Energy flows, whether we believe it, like it or want it to or not. The smart option is to understand the nature and function of energy and harness it, and in doing so create the life we truly want for ourselves. This is the 100% life: self-directed, in flow.

In a nutshell, what we need is a lesson in the flow of energy, and how to ensure we do not impede its flow through us, rather than thinking it can be forced by us. That is the ego talking. The alternative is the peaceful, knowing, trusting person who allows universal energy to flow through him or herself, shaped by positive states within.
